Change the Odds: Overview: Implications

Implications

Truly changing the odds for students requires a comprehensive response guided by these questions:

  1. Does every student in our school system have the benefit of a great teacher who sets high expectations for learning, develops strong relationships with students, and delivers great instruction?

  2. Have we provided every student in our system with challenging and personalized curricular pathways to life success?

  3. Are we able to identify and respond in real time to student learning needs in keeping with the “ounce of prevention” principle?

  4. Do we provide student supports that address the critical student-level influences of home environment, prior knowledge, interest, and motivation?

  5. To what extent can our school leaders guarantee high-quality instruction with low variance in their buildings?

  6. Does every school in our system exude a culture of high expectations for learning and behavior?

  7. Does our system exhibit a healthy preoccupation with failure, a continued reliance on data, and a willingness to call out and learn from our mistakes?
